Iconic performances and historic firsts mark the FIFA World Cup 2026™ group stage in Kansas City Stadium
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (July 1, 2026) — As the FIFA World Cup 2026™ knockout rounds begin, Kansas City has emerged as one of the tournament’s defining Host Cities, delivering a world-class experience for fans while showcasing the region’s passion for soccer, spirit of collaboration and ability to host the world’s biggest sporting event.
During the group stage, Kansas City became the backdrop for some of the tournament’s most memorable moments, hosting four matches: Argentina vs. Algeria, Ecuador vs. Curaçao, Tunisia vs. Netherlands and Algeria vs. Austria. Fans witnessed Lionel Messi’s historic hat trick, celebrated Curaçao’s first-ever FIFA World Cup™ point behind an unforgettable goalkeeping performance from Eloy Room and watched Austria and Algeria both punch their tickets to the knockout stage following one of the tournament’s most dramatic finishes. Off the pitch, supporters from around the world embraced signature Kansas City experiences, from the record-setting Oranje Fanwalk, first-of-its-kind regional transportation network and the unmistakable hospitality of the Heartland.

Across the four group stage matches, Kansas City Stadium welcomed 275,079 spectators, averaging 68,770 fans per match — above the tournament average — with two fixtures reaching full capacity. The four group stage matches featured 182 players from seven national teams, 13 goals, and supporters from 131 to 148 countries at each match, highlighting Kansas City’s role as a truly global stage for the world’s biggest sporting event.
Moments That Captivated the World
Kansas City quickly established itself as one of the standout Host Cities of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Across four matches, the tournament produced iconic performances, historic firsts and unforgettable drama, with records rewritten, milestones achieved, and knockout places decided in front of fans from around the world.
- Lionel Messi scored both his and the tournament’s first hat trick during Argentina’s victory over Algeria in Kansas City. Messi also became the oldest player to score a FIFA World Cup hat trick while marking his 200th international appearance.
- Making its FIFA World Cup debut, Curaçao earned the nation’s first-ever FIFA World Cup point, with goalkeeper Eloy Room delivering one of the tournament’s most memorable performances.
- The Netherlands’ victory over Tunisia saw Katia Itzel García become the first Latina to referee a men’s FIFA World Cup match, adding another landmark achievement to a tournament from Kansas City.

Team Base Camps: Kansas City’s impact extended well beyond match days, serving as one of the tournament’s leading Team Base Camp hubs with four participating nations calling the region home. Argentina, Algeria, the Netherlands and England brought a combined 346 team delegates plus their players, strengthening the tournament’s footprint and fostering lasting connections with local communities. In Lawrence, Kansas, Algeria’s stay became one of the standout stories of the group stage, as the city embraced the Desert Foxes and their supporters, transforming the community into a sea of green and white.
