Jul 16, 2026 | Press Releases

Six matches. Hundreds of thousands of fans. One region united to welcome the world.

Throughout the tournament, fans, players and media consistently pointed to Kansas City as one of the FIFA World Cup 2026™’s most memorable Host Cities.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (July 15, 2026) — Following the conclusion of its sixth and final FIFA World Cup 2026™ match, Kansas City has fulfilled the promise it made years ago: to deliver a safe, seamless and distinctly Kansas City experience while welcoming the world with unmatched hospitality. Along the way, the region elevated its global profile, introduced millions to its culture and character, and built lasting partnerships, capabilities and momentum that will benefit Kansas City long after the tournament concludes.

Across Missouri and Kansas, volunteers, first responders, local governments, businesses, community organizations, including professional and amateur sports teams and thousands of residents came together to create an unforgettable tournament experience for fans, players and media. Along the way, Kansas City showcased its vibrant culture, strengthened its global reputation and demonstrated why the Heartland is capable of hosting the world’s biggest events.

“Years of planning and collaboration made this moment possible, but at the heart of it all were the people who opened their arms and hearts to welcome the world to this special place,” said Pam Kramer, CEO of KC2026. “Here, in the Soccer Capital of America, civic and community groups came together to create an experience that was exceptional, welcoming and unmistakably Kansas City. We didn’t simply host six matches—we introduced the world to a region defined by collaboration, hospitality and an enduring passion for soccer. The way this community came together exceeded every expectation, and I couldn’t be more proud of what we accomplished together.”

Kansas City earned its place among the tournament’s defining Host Cities

Across six matches, including a historic Quarter-final, Kansas City consistently earned praise from fans, participating teams and international media for its operations, hospitality and atmosphere. Historic moments on the pitch, passionate supporters, four regional Team Base Camps and sold-out crowds combined to make Kansas City one of the defining stops of the FIFA World Cup 2026™.

During the Group Stage and knockout rounds, unforgettable moments continued at Kansas City Stadium:

  • Argentina outlasted Switzerland with two goals in extra time to advance to the semi-final against England.
  • Colombia extended its unbeaten run to four matches by defeating Ghana to advance to the Round of 16.
  • The Netherlands’ victory over Tunisia saw Katia Itzel García become the first Latina to referee a men’s FIFA World Cup match, adding another landmark achievement to a tournament from Kansas City.
  • Making its FIFA World Cup debut, Curaçao earned the nation’s first-ever FIFA World Cup point, with goalkeeper Eloy Room delivering one of the tournament’s most memorable performances.
  • Lionel Messi scored both his and the tournament’s first hat trick during Argentina’s victory over Algeria in Kansas City. Messi also became the oldest player to score a FIFA World Cup hat trick while marking his 200th international appearance.

Fans from around the world filled Kansas City Stadium while billions more followed the action from afar. The tournament elevated Kansas City’s profile on the global stage, reinforcing its reputation as the Soccer Capital of America® and introducing millions to the region’s culture, hospitality and passion for the game.

A seamless experience from arrival to final whistle

From the moment visitors landed at Kansas City International Airport to the final whistle, Kansas City made the FIFA World Cup™ easy to experience.

Central to that effort was ConnectKC26, an integrated transportation network built specifically for the tournament. Dedicated Stadium Direct service, targeted Regional Direct routes and complimentary Airport Direct service connected visitors across the region, helping fans spend less time navigating logistics and more time enjoying the tournament.

Together, fans registered for more than 215,000 passes across all three services, including nearly 145,000 on Stadium Direct, more than 45,000 on Regional Direct and more than 25,000 on Airport Direct. The coordinated transportation network reflected years of regional planning and collaboration, delivering one of the tournament’s most seamless mobility experiences.

A region that welcomed the world

Kansas City’s greatest differentiator wasn’t a venue or attraction. It was its people.

More than 3,400 volunteers became the face of the tournament, welcoming visitors with the warmth, enthusiasm and hospitality that earned comparisons to a “Disney-level” guest experience while achieving a volunteer show rate of 90 percent.

In a post-tournament video, KC2026 organizers thanked the volunteers and communities that embraced supporters from every corner of the globe. The welcome extended to the four Team Base Camp nations that made the region their home away from home during the tournament: Algeria at the University of Kansas, Argentina a Sporting KC Performance Center, England at Swope Soccer Village and the Netherlands at the KC Current Training Center.

Across the region, people adopted these visiting federations and their traditions. More than 36,000 people filled downtown Kansas City during the Netherlands’ iconic fan walk, while passionate banderazos filled streets with music, flags and celebration throughout the tournament.

One of the tournament’s most memorable stories unfolded in nearby Lawrence, where Algeria found an adopted home throughout its stay. Residents welcomed Les Fennecs with extraordinary warmth, local businesses adapted menus and merchandise to celebrate Algerian supporters, and relationships formed during the tournament are already creating opportunities for future educational, cultural and business partnerships.

The celebration extended well beyond the stadium at FIFA Fan Festival™ Kansas City, where more than 400,000 visitors gathered over 19 days to watch matches, enjoy local food and entertainment, and experience the best of Kansas City’s culture. Guests from more than 150 countries experienced firsthand the welcoming character and community spirit that define the region.
